ANTIBIOTICS

Antibiotics are a class of compounds (natural or synthetic), which have the effect of suppressing or stopping a biochemical process in an organism. A notable example is the suppression or or the ability to stop a bacterial infection.
The main use of antibiotics is the medical treatment of infectious diseases. However, it also has a biotechnological use in that it can be used as a selection tool for mutants and trans-formants. Antibiotics work the same way as pesticides in that they press or break the chain of metabolism. The difference between the two is that antibiotics only target bacteria.
Antibiotics differ from disinfectants in terms of how they work. Disinfectants eliminate germs by creating an environment around it that is not habitable by the germs.
Long-term usage of antibiotics could potentially lead to the development of resistance characteristics. Because of this, the aquatic bacteria that have been exposed to antibiotics for a long period of time become resistant towards it and spread its resistance genes to other microbes in its surroundings.
